Epsilon Alpha History

The Epsilon Alpha chapter was established in Tucson, Arizona, in 1918 as the 93rd chapter of the fraternity. In 2009, the chapter voluntarily relinquished its charter due to challenges in attracting and retaining new members. However, in 2019, a dedicated recolonization effort – led by alumni from the Phoenix and Tucson areas – marked the beginning of a new era.
For two years, Epsilon Alpha operated as a colony until the spring of 2021, when its members participated in the initiation ceremony at the Zeta Upsilon Chapter at Arizona State University in Tempe. Since its revival, Epsilon Alpha has experienced remarkable growth, now boasting over 120 members and standing as one of the fastest-growing chapters on campus.
The Epsilon Alpha chapter of Sigma Nu holds a distinguished legacy at the University of Arizona, with two of the university’s most iconic figures, John “Button” Salamon and J.F. “Pop” McKale, among its esteemed alumni.
John Button Salamon, a proud Sigma Nu, is remembered for coining the university’s famous rallying cry, “Bear Down.” His inspiring words, spoken to his teammates shortly before his passing, continue to embody the spirit of Arizona athletics.
J.F. “Pop” McKale, the founder of the Epsilon Alpha Chapter, left an indelible mark on the university through his coaching excellence. In recognition of his contributions to Arizona Athletics, the university’s renowned basketball area, McKale Center, bears his name.
The legacy of these two Sigma Nu brothers remains deeply embedded in traditions and history of the University of Arizona.
